Our work is about making insight from academic research and from public experience available to inform policy and public debate.

Research communication -  PublicSpace works with university research projects to communicate the insights through film and other media, to public, professional and policy audiences.  more ...

Public-interest research -  PublicSpace collaborates in inter-disciplinary, participatory research that seeks to generate useful and respectful dialogue with practitioner and public experience.  more ...

Public consultation -  PublicSpace works with organisations who want public insight and experience to inform their policy and action.  We design consultation processes that explicitly include the question of what may be in the public interest.  We also enable wider public debate through online resources.  more ...

We are a not-for-profit organisation, based in Staffordshire and the Lake District.  Other pages offer further details of our work and experience, with examples of our work to date.

Ethical policy

  • Where possible, we request that after review, the final documents and reports produced by us are made publicly available (maintaining the anonymity or confidentiality of the participants).
  • We do not work on projects which in our view are intended to mislead the public or undermine social justice or environmental protection.
  • We select our service providers such as telephone and banking on the basis of their ethical and environmental policies and their support for the not-for-profit sector.  We aim to pursue environmentally sustainable working practices, including sourcing electricity from renewable sources.

Our news

Our film communicating insight from an ESRC funded research project at Lancaster and Stirling Universities was submitted as one of the two ‘nominated outputs’ from the project to the ESRC  -  an acknowledgement of its intellectual content and communicative value.  The project was judged 'Outstanding' in the ESRC End of Award evaluation.

Minister David Milliband cites our dissemination booklet on Environmental Citizenship, and applies the issues to climate change: "The key point is simple and profound: in an age of climate change, the rational citizen has a wide set of social and environmental concerns".  Defra blog

Why the name?

'Public Space' refers to the social spaces for public interaction that enable and sustain our quality of life and democracy.

• they are physical - like public squares, public parks, town halls, village halls, footpaths and national parks.

• they are discursive - like public meetings, web blogs, letters pages, citizen panels, open debates in the media and parliamentary debates.

• they are temporal - like the moment of a meeting or a public demonstration, or a period of public consultation or public debate.

Public spaces need to be valued and sustained, at a time when the media eclipses public issues with private issues, and governments and corporations privatise what was public.

They can be opened up or closed down by what we do and don't do.  In the end, the quality of these public spaces is basic to our quality of life.

In our work we aim to contribute in our small way to sustaining the quality of public space and the quality of interaction and discussion within it.
